Picks of the Week: Bellingham has traditionally gone pretty hard for Halloween weekend live music and it feels like that tradition is starting up again. Supposing you want to go all out and get the full use out of your costumes, you might need to plan ahead just a little bit. A lot of these shows are going to be pretty full, so you might want to get tickets in advance.
Saturday you could start early by checking out some of the acts at the Karate Church, then move on to a couple of different options based on your taste. You’ve got a touring electronic act at the Buffalo, one of Bellingham’s best cover bands at Twin Sisters, or an awesome lineup of dancey, theatrical, noisy rock at the Shakedown1.
On Sunday, start off with surf music at Gruff, because everyone loves surf music, right? Then you can choose from funky jams at the Buffalo, the by-now-traditional Misfits covers experience with Horror Business at the Shakedown, or blues/ ragtime/ Americana weirdness at Boundary. There’s also this cool DIY show happening somewhere on Railroad. Something for everybody, basically.
What’s your plan for the big weekend?
New Artist of the Week:
MOPé is a new solo electronic project by Eli Ziebell. He describes it as “a love child of electro house and jungle terror”. I didn’t even know there was a subgenre called jungle terror, but if that sounds as intriguing to you as it did to me, you can check his stuff out on Soundcloud. He hasn’t done any live shows yet but would like to so if you’re into it let him know.
Ongoing weekly events:

Saturday Singer’s Saturday, Fireside, 3:30-6:30
Monday Irish Session, Greene’s Corner, 6-8 pm
Tuesday Lindy at the Leo, 6 pm: swing dancing

News and Upcoming Events:
There’s a new music magazine in town! They only have one article up so far but Breakout looks like an exciting new addition to our music journalism resources. Excited to see what they do next.
Cat Valley had a nice writeup in Audiofemme, along with premiering a new single.
Rumor has it the Culture Cafe open mic might be starting up again soon? I’ll keep you posted whenever I find out more.
Congrats to Aaron Guest on having a bunch of his music used in these Rick Steves videos! Nice move on Rick Steves’ part to use local music in a video about our local arts and culture scene.
Thanks for reading! If you haven’t yet, be sure to tell your friends about this newsletter!
Video of the week is from the Seattle band Tennis Pro. I wouldn’t normally promote a Seattle band here but it’s a tribute to Bellingham, so that’s neat.
Conflict of interest disclosure/ red alert: I play guitar in the current live band version of No-Fi Soul Rebellion. But I was a fan of the group for something like 15 years before joining, so I feel confident that I would be recommending this show anyway.
