Hey, we hit 500 email subscribers this week. That’s pretty cool, but 1000 would be even cooler. Tell your friends!
There aren’t a ton of listings this week, but that may be partly because Halloween is just around the corner and people are resting up. On the other hand, we’ve got not one but two exciting new bands debuting this week and profiled below. Picks of the Week:
The Jay Irwin show at Greene’s Corner should be fun. More details on that group below. Grace Love absolutely slayed the stage at the Shakedown the last time she was there, that should be great. The Wild Buffalo has a nice showcase of mostly local hip hop on Sunday night, with service industry discounts, no less. What are you looking forward to this week?
New Artist of the Week:
Some of you might know Jay Irwin from his work in local groups like Clambake or Sons of the Widow James. His new project is called Jay Irwin and the GP Sunsets. Compared to his past work it’s a little on the quieter side and he’s brought in some top local acoustic musicians. Robin Elwood and Elizabeth Elton of Lindsay Street play accordion and guitar, respectively, and Brian Rapp plays mandolin and bass1. Jay mentions The Gourds and 10,000 Maniacs as groups who may have helped inspire their sound. They don’t have any recordings out yet but you can head down to Greene’s Corner on Friday for their debut.
Another New Artist of the Week:
Vendovi are a new group playing a grungy mix of southern inspired rock, with blues and folk influences and an occasional metal edge. Check out some live tracks on their web site and if you’re into it, then cruise over to the Shakedown on Thursday to see them open up for Vandoliers.
Ongoing weekly events:
Wednesday Aaron Guest on piano, Boundary, 6 pm
Wednesday Open Mic, Honeymoon, 8:30 pm
Thursday Irish Session, Uisce, 7-9:30
Saturday Singer’s Saturday, Fireside, 3:30-6:30
Monday Irish Session, Greene’s Corner, 6-8 pm
Tuesday Lindy at the Leo, 6 pm: swing dancing
Tuesday jazz at Makeworth Market, 7 pm
Tuesday The Local Jam 102.3 7-8: local music on the radio
News and Upcoming Events:
The Western Front has a nice article talking about the local house show scene, which is really booming right now. I’m not typically listing those shows here but if you are looking for them and not finding them let me know and I can at least suggest some Instagrams you should be following.
Jay Williams has a new EP of dark ambient tracks out in time for Halloween.
It’s not live music but it still might be interesting to some of you to know that Bret Lunsford (one of the founders of Beat Happening and now the director of the Anacortes Museum), will be reading from his book about Harry Smith, the legendary compiler of the Anthology of American Folk Music, Sunday at 4 at Village Books.
Thanks for reading. Leave a comment and let us know what local music you are excited about these days!
Video of the week is this recently released live session with Separatr:
Conflict of interest disclosure: I play in another band with Robin.
