Picks of the Week:
Yogoman at Boundary is a legendary party combination. The Wandering Seas’ recent album Pleasant Bay is one of my favorite local releases of the last year, so I would suggest checking them out if you enjoy instrumental folk music. InStompTu is basically a less organized version of the Sunnyland Stomp, which basically means you can spend the afternoon wandering that neighborhood discovering cool music and art. Blues fans are definitely going to want to head down to the Bellwether on Thursday for Chris Eger.
Weekly events:
Thursdays Elizabeth Park concerts 6-8 pm
Sunday Robert Sarazin Blake, 5 pm online show
Sunday The Devilies, Kulshan on James St., 5 pm
Monday Irish Session, Greene’s Corner, 6:30-8 pm
Tuesday Lindy at the Leo, 6 pm
Tuesday Open Mic, Honeymoon, 8:30 pm
Tuesday Out of the Ashes, Boundary, 3:30- 5:30 pm
Upcoming:
The Posies sold out quick but it looks like there are still tickets for Built to Spill at the Wild Buffalo on the 30th. If you are planning on going to the Stringband Jamboree in August you should probably get tickets for that now since it is going to have limited capacity and no same-day tickets. Downtown Sounds is coming back in August but the lineup has not been announced yet. There aren’t really a lot of opportunities right now for louder original music, so it’s cool to see that Lipstitch have secured permission from the city to close down a block of Moore St. for an awesome rock party on the 31st. I haven’t seen any publicity for the fact that Wilco are coming to the Mt. Baker Theater in October and tickets are still available. This may be a case where uncertainty about the border gets us some shows that would otherwise go to bigger venues in Vancouver, so be sure to take advantage. The Milk Carton Kids and Loudon Wainwright III are also on the MBT calendar.
Finally a bit of sad news. There’s a new brewery going in to the old Firefly/ Green Frog space and they’ve already taken out the stage, dashing any hopes we might have had for a venue in there. It’s hard to blame anyone for not wanting to go into the live music business, which is tough at the best of times. But this is a reminder that we all need to get out and support the venues that do have live music or our stages will just keep disappearing. Here’s hoping someone out there already has plans for the next great venue!
Email bellinghammusicdigest@gmail.com if you’ve got news you want included next week!
Thank you for doing this, Jesse! Because of your list, I've already caught several events that I would have otherwise missed! Would you mind adding another set of events?
Dr. Jimmy and the Swingtime Serenaders, a full, 19-piece Big Band/Swing Band - featuring me (Tim Kraft) on vocals - will be at Boundary Bay 4 times in August - Aug. 10, 17, 24, 31 (the last 4 Tuesdays in August). Thank you!
