Picks of the Week:
Thursday has some nice jazzy options, with a high quality straight ahead jazz trio at Bar Ciccotti and the the more diverse Triple Mood at Boundary. Fans of Red Hot Chili Peppers won’t want to miss the tribute act on Friday. The Bellingham Irish Festival is coming right up, you can catch some good music and help them raise funds at Boundary on Saturday afternoon. Saturday night at the Shakedown is a stacked lineup of local music scene veterans who you might recognize. Personally I don’t know what to make of That 1 Guy but there’s no denying he’s created a unique sound and approach, and his fans won’t want to miss it. Sound off in the comments, what are you looking forward to?
New Band of the Week:
Fossil Fire (pictured at the top) is a new conglomeration of musicians who you might recognize from some other bands in the indie rock scene. Cullen Webster (guitar, vocals), Elsbeth Corbin (cello), Brian Webb (bass), Ian Stephens (guitar), and David Hall (drums) are veterans of bands like Great Pacific, Crooked Neighbors, and Tin Foil Cat. They are making their live debut this Friday with a show at the Shakedown. They also have a sweet debut single up on Bandcamp. They mention Pedro the Lion and Magnolia Electric Co. as influences, which sounds about right to me. It’s catchy but not simplistic, with some cool, knotty, instrumental interplay around a straightforward melody. Check them out if that sounds like your kind of thing!

News and Upcoming Events:
Cat Valley dropped a single from their upcoming EP, check out “Dive Bar Fight Song” here.
There was a nice feature in Whatcom Talk recently talking with Craig Jewell of the Wild Buffalo about the quest to keep venues alive through the COVID era.
Mount Saturn have some amazing new shirts available on their bandcamp.
This is kind of tangential, but musician Franz Nicolay (of The Hold Steady and World/ Inferno Friendship Society) has a new novel out, and it mentions both Bellingham and Blaine. It’s a good read about a washed up singer-songwriter who just can’t quit the road, with a lot of fun musical references.
